GPS technology can make your fishing expeditions much more rewarding. More accurate than “line of sight” or other more outdated navigation methods, a GPS unit tells you where you are and where you’re going to within a few meters. Once considered a luxury, GPS is now an essential item in the fisher’s arsenal. A standard handheld GPS can run as low as $95.00.
A GPS is very handy but useless without a good depth finder. Finding a marked spot or a rock pile you have previously marked is essential. You can be with in 5 foot of your mark but in which direction is the 5 feet. You would simply be guessing with your trusted Depth finder. Hand and hand they go along with your Nav maps.
Navigational maps give you “some what” accurate bottom information the only bad thing about navigational maps is they are expensive and change from year to year. The navigational maps give you an Idea of where to go and rely on your GPS and depth finder to actually get you there.

There has been plenty of fall or even spring days offshore with a clear day and perfect sea’s and we were having such a good time that a slight fog rolled in. With out our GPS we would have been guessing with the compass, the way home. Navigating thru the inter-coastal and up the narrow channels would almost be impossible with out the GPS.

Our GPS is a hand held Garmin , It takes 4 double A batteries and the life of the 4 batteries usually last one to 2 days on the water, so have plenty of spares. There are many other very good brands out there most, currently out of our price range. Of course we all would like the color GPS/Chart plotter/Depth finder but the price tag for technology is still out of the average fisherman’s range.

Weather you are finding your favorite grouper hole or simply marking some new spots or even navigating back thru a fog. Your GPS is a $100.00 investment you won’t want to live with out.
